WOE> 1.Unfortunate happening: a serious affliction or misfortune
2. grief: grief or distress resulting from a serious affliction or misfortune
We are now reading about the 4th angel that is blowing the 4th trumpet and we again see that 1/3 is a number to remember . Here the sky’s are struck and the moon and the sun and the stars were all darkened by 1/3. 1/3 of the day and likewise the night did not shine . Then we read about another angel flying through the midst of heaven saying with a loud voice , WOE , WOE , WOE , to the inhabitants of earth , because of the remaining 3 trumpets yet to come
As we have seen in the previous verses , 1/3 of all the trees and grass are burned up,1/3 of all the seas and creatures living in them , 1/3 of all the rivers and streams, and now 1/3 of the moon, sun and stars are darkened creating alot less light on the planet .
Yet , this angel flying through heaven is saying in a loud voice WOE, WOE , WOE for those still on earth , the next three coming trumpet judgements are even worse than these 4 previous ones .
BITTER>strong and sharp in taste: having a sharp strong unpleasant taste,
Here we are continue to read in the 8th chapter of the Book of Revelation about the 7 Trumpet Judgements.
As the third angel sounded the third trumpet a great star fell from Heaven, burning like a torch and it fell on 1/3 of the rivers and streams , this star being called wormwood appeared to make the waters bitter and 1/3 of all the rivers and streams were so severely damaged( that many men were killed .) It appears the rivers and streams were poisened and when the people drank or swam in them they were killed .
So now from our last verse , we have this situation , 1/3 of all the sea is destroyed and now 1/3 of all the rivers and streams . That would be a large amount of the worlds water supply destroyed in two trumpet judgements . People will thirst as never before .
Remember always >
16 For God so loved the world that He gave
His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have
THIRD > One of three parts: one of three equal parts of something
It would help right now to remember that in chapter 1 verse 3 we read ,
3 Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.
Without this comforting verse it would sometimes be difficult to read on in the coming judgements . Gods promise to us is the same yesterday , today and tomorrow . He loves us and does not want one single one to be lost .
Reading in todays verse we read that the second trumpet is being sounded and the news is not good for those left on earth .
When the second angel sounded the 2nd trumpet , something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea and 1/3 of the sea became blood and a third of the living creatures living in the sea died and a third of the ships were destroyed .
We must remember in Johns ancient times he tried to describe what he was seeing in what he knew to be at that time . Today his description may be alot different , what looked like a burning mountain , could mean alot of different things in our world today . The key idea here is 1/3 of all the worlds seas and creatures of the sea will be lost .
REVELATION 8:7 > TODAYS KEY WORD> THROWN
THROWN>. Propel something from the hand: to make something move relatively quickly from the hand and through the air
The first angel sounds the 1st Trumpet and hail and fire followed mingled with blood, and they were thrown to earth. A third of the trees were burned and all the green grass was burned up.
Here we are reading that after the 1st trumpet was blown by the first angel in this chapter that 1/3 of all the trees on the Planet were destroyed by fire , as well as ALL , (ALL , GREEN GRASS) Oh my , all the beautiful grass everywhere on the planet will be gone , burned up !
FIRE >Destructive burning of something: a situation in which something is destroyed or damaged by burning,
As you look at the picture I used in todays verse , know that this mountain , Wedge Mountain ,here in Leavenworth was filled with lush greenery for many decades until 16 years ago this summer , and that is when fire went raging over this mountain and destroyed everything on it , it has taken this long to see some recovery , but it is still very sparse . Fire can be a very dangerous thing as we read here in verse 8:5
The picture we see through John’s eyes here is getting darker , we go from complete silence in Heaven for about 1/2 hour to the picture we begin to read about here . The angel has taken the censor and filled it with fire and thrown it down to earth, obviously causing quite a disturbance as you read this verse.
ASCENDED >move upward: to go upward, usually vertically or into the air .
Here in verse 8:4 John has painted a beautiful picture of what he is seeing .
The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the saints is ascending before God from the angels hand . Beautiful picture here
PRAYERS > being: a spoken or unspoken communication with God.It may express praise, thanksgiving, confession or a request for something such as help or somebody’s wellbeing.
Here in verse 8:3 we read about another angel having a golden censer (container for burning incense: a container used for burning incense, especially one that is swung in a religious procession or ceremony) is being given much incense, that He should offer it with prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the Throne .
TRUMPETS >Brass instrument: a brass musical instrument, either straight or coiled, with three valves and a flared bell. It has a brilliant tone and a middle to high register
We can only imagine what a trumpet in Heaven will look or sound like >
Here in this verse, 7 Angels who stand before God are given each a Trumpet, these trumpets herald the end of the Seal judgement, and the beginning of the Trumpet Judgements . There will be 7 Judgements , the same as the Seals , remember God number of completeness is 7.
SILENCE >Quietness: the absence or lack of noise
Have you ever experienced an absolute absence of noise , almost impossible I think in this world , either we hear birds chirping , or homes creaking , children playing , dogs barking , think about it . Even in a cathedral there is noise , even if no one is talking or singing , noise is a part of our daily life . For Heaven to be absolutely devoid of noise for that long a period of time is unimaginable .
In chapter 8 verse 1 Jesus opens the final seal, the seventh seal , after this will come many more judgements . We have been reading in Chapter 7 how the 4 Living Creatures , the 24 Elders and all the Angels in Heaven as well as all the Tribulation Saints have been either singing or worshiping or crying out to God on the Throne and the Lamb.
But when He that is worthy to open the scroll ,and unseal the seals , opens the final seal , there is complete silence in Heaven . No one makes a sound for about 1/2 hour we read in this verse .
Something is coming that silences everyone in Heaven . We will read about that in the upcoming verses.
